Tours will be 10 days and will feature some of my favorite areas to bird and see wildlife. All tours are custom, and we design a tour with your input! Our schedule is flexible to allow for maximizing birding in optimum weather in the various areas we visit.

tour options:
The Northern Loop Tour will feature Monteverde Cloud forest, Palo Verde National Park, Carrera National Park and La Selva Tropical Research Station.

The Southern Loop Tour will feature San Gerardo de Dota, Cerro del Muerte, Valle General, Wilson Botanical Gardens and Dominical.

A 10 day tour gives us a chance to pick areas from both loops and see an amazing variety of Costa Rica's natural wealth.

Each tour loop will feature prime quetzal habitat in the cloud forest as well as a variety of old and mixed growth tropical forest with a variety of elevations, visiting both private and public parks and preserves.

tour basics:
Each tour is designed to minimize travel times while maximizing visits to diverse habitats.
Trips will start on the evening of your arrival into San Jose, Costa Rica. Your first night is at a local hotel near the San Jose airport, and we will leave the next morning to start birding. We will spend 10 days birding, then return to San Jose after our last day of birding to the same hotel, close to the airport for those departing the next day. The tour fees include 11 nights of accommodation, 10 days of birding with all transportation in Costa Rica, all general guiding plus local guides fees. Not included are occasional entrance fees to parks or meals. You are welcome to tip the local guides.

All groups will be small to maximize flexibility. A typical day will start with…you guessed it, birding! We’ll do most of our driving (usually only a few hours) during the midday, typically a siesta time for birds. That will allow us to be on site during the best birding times, morning and late afternoon.

other tour activities: While the tours are focused on birding and natural history we have plenty of time to explore other activities; a swim in the warm Pacific, dining in great local restaurants, a surfing lesson, practicing your Spanish skills (I'm fluent and can help) or doing a zip-line through the cloud forest. I can even take you on the "ultimate canopy tour", a tandem paragliding flight! (I'm a tandem paragliding instructor.)

tour schedule:
January 28-February 7, 2019.
At other times of the year tours for at least 2 clients for 10 days or more can be scheduled.

custom tour:
All tours are custom. Before the trip I want to know your needs and desires so that we can plan the tour together. I keep each tour flexible so that we can alter our itinerary depending on weather, rare bird sightings, your needs and comfort. We can also custom design a longer tour that includes some of my favorite areas that require a bit more time. Tortuguero National Park, Rara Avis and Corcovado National Park are examples of places I love to visit and bird, but take at least 2 to 3 days each to do them justice.

tour prices:
Tour fees are $2600 per person for shared room, $400 extra for single room option.
Young naturalists are free to 6 years old, half price from 7-17 years old when accompanied by two adults!
